Too often, Shia Muslims appear in the news only when others choose to speak about us. Our communities, scholars, institutions and political concerns are frequently misunderstood, reduced to stereotypes or ignored altogether.
Wilayah exists to change that.
We believe Shia Muslims should not simply consume narratives produced by others. We should have credible institutions capable of reporting events, scrutinising power, documenting our communities and explaining the world from a perspective that understands who we are.
What we cover
Our coverage stretches from Britain and Europe to Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, the Gulf and the wider world.
We report on politics, conflict and international affairs, while also giving serious attention to stories that are often overlooked elsewhere: the hawza and Islamic scholarship, the Islamic calendar, Shia institutions, community affairs, youth, culture and the intellectual life of the Muslim world.

Journalism with a perspective
Wilayah does not pretend that journalism takes place in an intellectual vacuum.
Every publication approaches the world with assumptions about what matters, whose voices deserve attention and which stories are worth telling. Our perspective is clear: we approach events from a Shia Muslim standpoint, informed by a commitment to justice, human dignity and resistance to oppression.
That perspective does not remove our responsibility to report accurately. It makes that responsibility even more important.
We distinguish between news, analysis and opinion, seek reliable evidence, and aim to represent facts faithfully even when they are complicated or uncomfortable.
Editorial standards
Wilayah launched in July 2026 as an independently run, reader-funded news platform.
Our editorial decisions — what we investigate, what we publish and how we frame our coverage — are made independently of political parties, governments, corporations and commercial interests.
Our reporting draws on primary sources, established news agencies and publications, official statements, regional media and specialist analysts. Wherever possible, we credit and link readers directly to the material on which our reporting is based.
Where an article contains analysis or commentary rather than first-hand reporting, we make that distinction clear.
Trust cannot be demanded. It has to be earned.
Independent because our readers make it possible
Wilayah has no corporate or political backers.
We are funded entirely through the support of readers who believe an independent Shia Muslim media platform is worth building.
That independence matters. It allows us to pursue stories because they matter to our readers and communities — not because they satisfy advertisers, donors or political patrons.
